Aretha Franklin Has Pancreatic Cancer

It was announced today that R & B Legend Aretha Franklin has Pancreatic Cancer.  There had been speculation and concern about Mrs. Franklin’s health for some time.  The LA times reports

WJBK Fox 2 in Detroit cites a family member in confirming a National Enquirer print-edition report Wednesday that specifically mentioned pancreatic cancer, the disease that claimed Patrick Swayze and Michael Landon. Franklin’s rep had no comment for the Detroit News, which cited a source “familiar with the situation” in its cancer report.

“God is still in control,” Franklin said in a statement after her surgery, which was deemed “highly successful.” “I had superb doctors and nurses who were blessed by all the prayers of the city and the country.” Franklin has been visited several times by the Rev. Jesse Jackson, who on Wednesday said she was “recovering very well” from surgery.

I’m praying for Aretha’s recovery.  She is definitely one of my favorites!

Patrick Dempsey Walks a 10k Mile with His Mother

Patrick Dempsey and his Mother Amanda Dempsey kicked off  ‘The Dempsey Challenge’  by walking a 10k race  to raise awareness and money for the ‘Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer, Hope and Healing’.  Amanda Dempsey has battled Ovarian Cancer twice.   I love these kind of stories.   Patrick’s giving back is obviously inspired by his love for his Mother.  Nice!  Wow, he looks just like her!

Jay Leno Interviews The Biggest Losers’ Shay and Daniel

Shay Sorrells and Daniel Wright were eliminated from ‘The Biggest Loser’ on November 10th.  It was a double elimination week and Shay and Daniel were both sent home from the Orange Team.  Shay started on the show as the heaviest contestant ever at 476 lbs and lost 100 lbs in the 9 weeks before she was eliminated (She set a new record by losing 100lbs in 9 weeks of competing).   Shay has now lost 150lbs.  She is a married Mother of 2.   Daniel was on the show twice  (the first time, he came on the show with his Father) and lost a total of 230 lbs.  He is a 20 year old Student.

Michelle Obama Hosts ‘Healthy Kids Day’ at the White House

 

Michelle Obama hosted the ‘Healthy Kid’s Fair’ at the White House today!  She is shown here participating in various exercises at the event in hopes of promoting healthy living and activities for America’s Youth!  The Healthy Kids Fair included events on cooking healthy meals and emphasized children getting a proper amount of outdoor exercise each day.  I love  how Michelle is always so active with Children an very concerned with reducing the obesity rate among our children who are spending way to much time in front of the Television.  And….she obviously can handle a hoola hoop!  Have we ever seen a First Lady be so active?  Love it!

Who Wants a Cheeseburger on a Krispy Kreme Donut?

 

Seriously?  Wow…..How did someone come up with this?  I’m stuck on the fact that Krispy Kreme glazed donut is the sweetest thing I have ever tasted and it’s sticky too…..why would anyone want to put a burger topped with an egg and bacon on a Krispy Creme?  Seriously?  Has anyone tasted this one?  If you have, please let me know what it taste like!

The “Craz-E Burger”, or Krispy Kreme burger, was sold at the West Springfield’s agricultural fair “Better Living Center“ which ended October 4.

The donuts burger is a bacon cheeseburger with buttered Krispy Kreme glazed donuts as a bun. It is estimated to contain 1,500 calories a piece. With fries and a pop on the side, you are pretty much done for the day in terms of daily calories intake. A total of 17,000 of them were sold at the festival.

Krispy Kreme burger is said to be invented in 2005 by a bar owner in Decatur. Ga.

What is funny is how angry Fox’s Shep Sith is about it!  I mean, I am a little unnerved that someone came up with this, but he acts like someone sentenced his overweight kid to eat one everyday!

Beastie Boys’ Adam ‘MCA’ Yauch Cancer Video Announcement

 

Beastie Boys’ Co-Founder and Member Adam Yauch BKA ‘MCA’ or Nathaniel Hornblower released this video announcing that he has Cancer.

He is optimistic and reports that the cancerous growth is locating on one area of his salivary glands and that after surgery and radiation treatment, there shouldn’t be any damage to his vocal cords.

Of course the Beastie Boys are cancelling all scheduled tour dates, but will reschedule when MCA’s Health allows.

Prayers and  a speedy recovery to him!

Regina Benjamin is President Obama’s Nominee for Surgeon General

 

 

President Obama has made his choice for Surgeon General: Dr. Regina Benjamin:

Obama called her an “outstanding candidate to be America’s leading spokesperson on issues of public health.”

Benjamin, a rural health care specialist, founded a clinic to serve the poor along Alabama’s Gulf Coast.  She is the founder and chief executive officer of the Bayou La Batre Rural Health Clinic in Alabama, and has made a mission of treating Bayou La Batre’s poor and immigrant communities.

Growing up in Daphne, Alabama, Benjamin received her medical degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 1984.  She was named by U.S. News and World Report as one of America’s best leaders last year.

Benjamin’s father died with diabetes and high blood pressure, her only brother of HIV, her mother of lung cancer “because as a young girl, she wanted to smoke just like her twin brother could” – an uncle now on oxygen as a result.

“I cannot change my family’s past. I can be a voice in the movement to improve our nation’s health care and our nation’s health,” Benjamin said. “I want to be sure that no one falls through the cracks as we improve our health care system.”

 Congratulations to Dr. Benjamin!

Travis McCoy travels to Africa, The Phillipines and India to Raise AIDS/HIV Awareness!

Travis McCoy of Gym Class Heroes  is travelling to Africa, The Phillipines to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS and meet with Some incredible Young People who Run AIDS Prevention Clinics.  This is such an awesome thing that he is doing and he is chronicling his journey on his website www.theunbeatenpath.com.   Travis left New York on June 14th to start this incredible journey.  Follow him on Twitter and receive his updates.    Also, Travis will write a song inspired by his experiences to be released on World AIDS Day.  I can’t wait to hear this song and I am tuning in daily to read more about his trip.  Below is one of his updates!

I had never been to Africa before, but standing at the top of a sand dune overlooking the slums of Khayelitsha yesterday, a section of South Africa’s sprawling Cape Flats, I felt completely connected to the homeland. The sun was setting, reflecting light off the millions of corrugated tin roofs below, the last hint of day before the Flats
went dark and their two million inhabitants to bed. Overwhelmed and overtired my thoughts went on to paper.

“Today I met my brother, two worlds apart.
One fire one heart.
Shantytowns, pastels and browns.
Smiling children, abandoned buildings.
We are not lost.”

Could You Eat These Burgers Without Any Guilt?

With a clear conscious, could you order and eat these burgers?  First of all to even get to them, you have to walk into a restaurant  named ‘Heart Attack Girll’.  I can’t lie, out of curiosity I would probably have to go there at least once just to check it out. 

But I don’t think that I could order The Triple and Quadruple Bypass Burgers  (pictured above).  The restaurant is known for their hospital theme and enormous burgers.   What does the rest of the menu look like?  Respiratory Failing Fries?  Strawberry Stroke  Shakes?  Diabetes Double Death Desserts?  But hey, I gotta admire that they  are pretty upfront about how their  foods will affect you!  You won’t hear about anybody suing them with a ‘I didn’t know that it could block my arteries lawsuit’!
